Change In The SBA

Collette McKenna Parker

January 27, 2009

Heard the name Karen Mills yet? She's the president of private equity firm MMP Group in Brunswick, Me., and is Obama's pick to run the Small Business Administration.

Mills, who also co-founded New York private equity firm Solera Capital, (www.soleracapital.com) and served as chief operating officer of leveraged buyout firm E.S. Jacobs & Co., clearly understands the needs of entrepreneurs. In a 2008 Business Week article, Mills stated that what's currently missing in the SBA is "a strategy that puts small business at the center, that differentiates between the high-impact, high-growth small businesses who have these needs for more long-term equity capital vs. the Main Street businesses which today need reinstatement of their short-term credit."

When she accepted the nomination last month, Mills reiterated her commitment to entrepreneurs: "America's spirit of entrepreneurship is one of our greatest assets as we compete in the global economy."
